How do we define PEACE? The Perspectives
How do we define PEACE?
The word “peace” is derived from the Latin word pax which literally means a pact, a contract, and an agreement to end war or any dispute and conflict between two people, nations or antagonistic groups of people. A situation or a period of time in which there is no war or violence in a country or an area is often described as peaceful. It can be regarded “as the absence of war, fear, conflict, anxiety, suffering and violence and about peaceful coexistence.”
It is further defined as a “process involving activities that are directly or indirectly linked to increasing development and reducing conflict, both within specific societies and in the wider international community”.
In this respect, peace therefore connotes the absence of violence or war, the presence of justice, equality and development; the
existence of rule of law, respect for human life and dignity, and tolerance among and between people; maintenance of a balanced ecosphere and more importantly, having inner peace and wholeness.
Words that signify peace such as the Hebrew word shalom, the Arabic word salaam, the Yoruba word alaafia, the Hausa word zaman lafiya and the Igbo word udo all signify many things that human beings desire such as safety, welfare, prosperity, security, fortune and friendliness.
We shall consider more education on this issue of peace.
