PEACEFUL COEXISTENCE - The Process

WE CAN LIVE IN PEACE

In recent time, the world has witnessed waves of violent extremism that have taken lives of many innocent people either based on religious, ethnic or political grounds. In 2014 alone, the Global Terrorism Index had shown that, Afghanistan, Syria, Iraq, Pakistan, and Nigeria were home to 78 percent of the lives lost to terrorist attacks in the globe and it has further increased today.

In Nigeria, as a result of Boko Haram insurgency alone, over Twenty Thousand people have lost their lives especially in its North Eastern region. Across the country in every region, the failure to significantly address evident cases of farmers/pastoralists, minority/majority, religious domination, political power struggle and corruption, have further aggravated terrorism, cattle rustling, armed robbery, political thuggery, kidnapping for ransom, and many others. More so, the rise in domestic violence against the opposite genders have led to increase in divorce and broken homes.

Hence, it is become necessary that individuals and communities pursue peace with varied degrees of attainment as religions uphold and cherish peace, cultures promote peace, societies develop in peace, and individuals prosper in peace. Although there is no society where absolute peace exists, it remains a virtue that must be continually advanced as it is part of God’s original plan for all.

We shall consider the possibilities of peaceful coexistence in a subsequent article.
